Reclaim Your Energy When You Can’t Quit

When we lose sight of where our energy levels are, if we continue to push and push ourselves beyond what our body is acceptable with, that’s how we go into burnout territory.

Today I want to share some tips on managing your energy when you can't escape certain commitments like work or tech rehearsals. If you're a performing artist, you know how crucial tech week and rehearsals are to honing your craft. So, let’s dive in!

Last week on YouTube, we discussed the importance of being mindful of your energy and doing everything you can to protect it. It's essential to avoid pushing ourselves beyond what our bodies can handle, as this leads to burnout. But sometimes, we can’t say no to certain obligations. Whether it's work or a commitment you just can’t back out of, here are some practical strategies to manage and protect your energy while still squeezing in some rest.

Managing Work Obligations

For many of us, work is a non-negotiable part of our lives. While it’s valuable to take a mental health day when needed, there are times when you simply can't take time off due to deadlines or commitments. Here are a few ideas to help you manage:

  1. Create Luxurious Routines: When stress levels are high, indulge in activities that make you feel luxurious and relaxed. Start your day with a soothing routine like chanting or meditation. Dr. Wayne Dyer's Sound Meditation for Manifestation is a personal favorite of mine. Incorporate stretching, walking, or listening to motivational podcasts to set a positive tone for your day.

  2. Engage Your Senses: Use scents like incense or your favorite candle to create a calming environment. Music can also be incredibly uplifting. Choose tunes that keep you energized without being distracting. For me, nostalgic 90s hits work perfectly!

  3. Make Life Easier: If possible, simplify your evening routine by picking up dinner or ordering in. Stock your freezer with ready meals for nights when you need a break from cooking. Little shortcuts can make a significant difference.

  4. Relaxing Baths: End your day with a bath. Use bath bombs, salts, or just enjoy the water. Watching inspirational videos or reading a book can be restful and rejuvenating.

Optimizing Commutes

If you commute to work, here are some ways to make that time more enjoyable and less draining:

  1. Inspiring Audio: Listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or novels that you find inspiring or entertaining. Sometimes, letting your mind escape into a novel can be just as rejuvenating as a self-help book.

  2. Mindful Practices: If you take public transport, incorporate mindfulness practices like breathwork or meditation. This can help reduce stress and set a positive tone for your day.

Handling Tech Week and Rehearsals

(or other extra-curricular activities)

For performing artists, tech week can be especially demanding. Here are some tips to help you get through it:

  1. Prioritize Physical Self-Care: Warm up properly before rehearsals and cool down afterwards with massages or stretches. Eat nourishing foods, stay hydrated, and ensure you’re getting plenty of electrolytes.

  2. Avoid Late Nights: While it might be tempting to go out after rehearsals, try to resist. Prioritize sleep to allow your body to recover.

  3. Nourish Your Body: Post-rehearsal routines like a cool or warm shower, applying ice packs, and using self-massage techniques can help your body feel better prepared for the next day.
